Six-time Mr Olympia champion Dorian Yates comes from humble beginnings in rural England. Working on a farm, Dorian bulked up quickly as a child working as a farm hand, and was forced to grow up fast after his father died at 13. At 16 he struck out for himself in Birmingham, joining the local punk scene and avidly listening to the Clash, Sex Pistols, and PIL while working in a slaughterhouse. At 19, he was arrested during a riot, and was sent to jail for six months. In jail he became friends with a guard, and before long started training at the prison gym. When he was 21, Dorian had his first competition. Before long he was winning competitions, his first victory being the Night of Champions. That same year, in his first showing in the Mr Olympia contest, Dorian placed second – an astounding showing for the young man, and a foreshadowing of the next year, where he won first. Dorian Yates won the Mr Olympia every year until 1997, establishing him as the most prolific bodybuilder of the 1990's. At 5'10" and weighing about 250 pounds, Dorian definitely stands out in the crowd. He has featured in many workout videos, usually showing his demanding weekly weight training. Called the 'British Bulldog', the 'Beast of Britain', and 'Shadow' because of his habit of showing up for competitions and then disappearing into his own private world. Dorian, a wildlife and safari fan, wants to work outdoors once he retires from bodybuilding. |
